bridge
The humber
bridge was the last great bridge to be built in the UK and spans the
humber estury near Hull. It is over 1.4km in total. In
1959 the first humber bridge act was passed by parliament with the
Government deciding in 1969 that the bridge was to be built.
Financing was agreed by 1971 and the detailed design began. Building
work began in 1972 on the south approach road with the main sub
structure underway by 1973. By May 1974 the north tower was
completed and 1976 the south tower completed. Cabling took 2 years
from 1977 to 1979 with the box sections being erected from 1979 to
1980. On
24th June 1981 the bridge opened to traffic, with he official
opening by H.M. The Queen on 17th July 1981. The
bridge is one of the worlds longest single span suspension bridges.
